When teams are disconnected and departments compete for resources, the patient experience cannot help but suffer.

Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring fosters empathy, compassion, and mutual respect across disciplines and departments.

Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring (RSC) is a three-day seminar that engages, grounds, renews, and unifies staff from all disciplines within an organization. This seminar provides an immediate infusion of empathy, compassion, and mutual respect throughout the culture of an organization as it immerses direct care providers, service support personnel, managers, and leaders in the foundational principles of Relationship-Based Care and caring science. The focus of the program is caring across three vital relationships: the clinician’s relationship with self, with colleagues, and with patients and their families.

In cultures in which RSC is offered across the continuum of care and service, personal responsibility prevails, healthy relationships thrive, appreciation is openly expressed, and caring and healing are the constant and core reasons for existence.

Participants in all roles gain a deep understanding of the behaviors and actions that lead to an improved patient experience. Participants also report  a personal reawakening of joy and meaning in their work and a renewed commitment to shared purpose, goals, and a new, more authentic level of professionalism in collaboration with colleagues. Organizational leaders report a positive impact on the unit and department culture resulting in improved collaboration across roles, disciplines, units, and departments as well as improved staff and patient satisfaction.

Susan Edstrom explains how Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring (RSC) touches staff, patients, and their families.

Organizational Outcomes: Strong Interdisciplinary and Interdepartmental Colleagueship

Enlightened health care organizations across the world have seen a huge return on the investments they’ve made in giving their staff members structured time together to build the kind of empathy and mutual appreciation necessary for true partnerships to flourish throughout their organizations. Many of our client organizations attribute their cultures of exemplary colleagueship and excellent patient care to their widespread use of our Re-Igniting the Spirit of Caring program. Several of our organizations have shared this program with more 3,000 of their employees.
