Courageous Leadership

Mary Koloroutis, Marie Manthey & Rebecca Smith attend 2018 Women’s Health Leadership Trust Award Banquet honoring Marie Manthey

By Mary Koloroutis

I am reading a new book. It is about courageous leaders, Forged in Crisis:  The power of courageous leadership in turbulent times.   It profiles 5 well known courageous leaders:  polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rachel Carson.

As I read it, I thought of Marie Manthey and what she has taught me and so many in health care about courageous leadership. One passage stood out to me:

The concept that at times the most powerful thing one can do is to invest in oneself, without signs of great outward progress … that is difficult for us to grasp today.  We’re so keen to arrive right now, to check this or that objective off our lists and move on, that we have trouble realizing that a period of gathering – our strength, tools, and experiences – are as significant as the big, external leaps forward along our paths.

Marie’s story – one she has shared so freely – is one of gathering, of clarifying what is true and taking the right action.  The other teaching, I have taken from Marie is one’s core truth is everything.  It is in truth that we transcend chaos.  Marie’s steadfast vision and courage is why CHCM is still contributing to the field today and why that CEO on the committee that selected our latest book, Advancing Relationship-Based Cultures, for the ACHE Hamilton Award told me “ One of the major deciders for the selection of your book is that your book is its timelessness – it would be relevant 10 years ago, it is relevant today, and it will be relevant 10 years from now – because your work is about our humanity.”

Marie Manthey’ s steadfast commitment to truth along with her courage to step out of her comfort zone, imagining what might be possible, has been and continues to be contagious.  She invites us all to bring a better version of health care forward. This mindset shared through her books, salons, speaking engagements and mentorship is making a substantial impact on health care.

We are proud that others in health care also recognize Marie’s contributions. She was the recipient of the 2018 Courage Award by the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST.  She is being recognized along with 20 other Minnesota women who have taken a risk and demonstrated courage in navigating the unknown to help the health care industry move boldly to transform its future. Congratulations Marie!
