A healthcare professional can be excellent at their work and still feel unprepared for the first day in a leadership role. Suddenly, they are guiding team conversations, making staffing decisions, managing resources, and connecting organizational priorities to what happens in their department every day.
Creative Health Care Management (CHCM) created its new Leadership Development Courses to help close that gap. Designed for new, emerging, and current healthcare leaders, the courses bring practical learning to the responsibilities leaders face on the job. Registration is now open for its first four scheduled virtual courses, beginning in February 2027. Healthcare organizations can also partner with CHCM to build a leadership development experience around their own people and priorities.
Why Healthcare Leadership Development Needs Practical Application
Healthcare professionals are often asked to lead because they have demonstrated strong clinical, operational, or professional expertise. Those strengths matter. Yet a new leadership role brings responsibilities that may be unfamiliar: navigating difficult conversations, supporting team performance, planning staffing, interpreting budgets, and making decisions with competing needs in view.
An introduction to leadership concepts is a start. Leaders also need time to examine how those concepts apply to the conversations and decisions waiting for them at work. That is the focus of the CHCM Leadership Development Courses: helping participants build knowledge they can use, reflect on their approach, and grow more confident in their daily practice.
Four Virtual Leadership Development Courses Begin in 2027
The first four scheduled courses address distinct parts of healthcare leadership. Participants can choose the course most relevant to their role or register for more than one.

Building Bridges: Leadership Principles for Department Managers
Begins February 1, 2027 | 16.25 contact hours
Healthcare department managers connect the people providing care with the priorities and operations of the organization. In this approximately five-week course, participants explore their leadership styles and strengthen skills in relationships, communication, decision-making, performance management, and goal setting.
The course combines independent learning with three live webinars. It is designed for new and aspiring department managers across healthcare disciplines, with select nursing-specific content.

Charting the Course: Navigating Nurse Staffing with Confidence
Begins March 14, 2027 | 10.5 contact hours
Staffing decisions require nurse managers to consider patient needs, team well-being, organizational resources, and applicable requirements. This approximately three-week course helps participants build a stronger foundation for those decisions.
Through independent learning and three live webinars, participants examine staffing plans, recruitment and selection, orientation, scheduling, and approaches to changing workforce needs.

Every Number Tells a Story: Budgeting for Nurse Managers
Begins April 18, 2027 | 8 contact hours
A department budget tells a story about the people, resources, and operations behind patient care. This approximately two-week course helps nurse managers read and interpret that information, understand variances, and see how staffing and census affect financial results.
Independent learning and two live webinars give participants a more approachable way to connect financial information with the decisions they make and discuss in their departments.

RISE to Leadership: Emerging Leaders
Begins May 1, 2027 | 16 contact hours
Taking the first step into leadership starts with understanding your strengths and the responsibilities ahead. This six-week course helps emerging healthcare leaders explore whether leadership is the right path for them while building foundational skills in communication, decision-making, and managing people and resources.
Independent learning and three live webinars give participants opportunities to reflect on their leadership styles, apply new concepts, and prepare for future leadership roles with greater confidence.

More Than a Four-Course Series
The scheduled courses are one way to participate in the CHCM Leadership Development Courses. Organizations can also work with CHCM to create a development experience for a team, a leadership group, or leaders across a system.
An organization might choose one focused workshop, combine several topics, or build a broader academy. Delivery can be virtual or in person, with content and scheduling shaped by the organization’s goals. Depending on the need, additional areas of focus may include accountability, change leadership, decision-making, conflict management, resilience, and team effectiveness.
Mary Harper, PhD, RN, NPDA-BC, FAAN, developed and leads the Leadership Development Courses. Their approach reflects a simple question: What will participants be better prepared to do when they return to work? Whether the topic is a difficult conversation, a staffing challenge, or a budget review, learning should help leaders take a clearer next step.
