Florence Nightingale who is considered the founder of modern nursing because she served as a manager and trainer of battlefield nurses during the Crimean War. Her knowledge and skills drastically reduced infections and saved many lives.

Essentially Florence Nightingale created the profession of nursing.

The first Nurses Week in the U.S. was held in 1954 from October 11 to 16 to honor the 100th anniversary of her fateful mission.

Nurses Week was created by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) as early as 1953 and has been celebrated regularly since 1965. In the United Kingdom, an annual service is held at Westminster Abbey by a “passing of the lamp” celebration. Australia has a Nurse of the Year award ceremony and distributes several other awards throughout the week.

The U.S. and Canada also observe RN Recognition Day, which falls on May 6.

In the United States, the first proclamation for National Nurses’ Week began from the hard work of Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Dorothy sent a proposal to then President Eisenhower in 1953 to create an official nurse day.

National Nurses Week was first established in 1954 by the American Nursing Association as a way of honoring all nurses. The week is also intended to raise awareness of nursing issues, such as the shortage of nurses in the United States and encourage people to pursue careers in nursing.

About 20 years later, President Nixon created a week in February 1974 to acknowledge the nursing profession.

National Nurses Week is a time for nurses to celebrate their achievements and the contributions they make to society.

Furthermore, nurses week is a nursing recognition event for previous or existing nursing workforce staff.

What is National Nurses Day?

The American Nurses Association created a National Nurses day called “National Recognition Day for Nurses” for every May 6th.

In 1982 President Ronald Regan proclaimed this day to honor and recognize nurses and their indispensable and ongoing commitment to patients, the community, and healthcare.
