Shared Governance (Professional Governance)

At my most recent organization, CHCM assisted with the implementation of Shared Governance and was an excellent resource on the Magnet® Journey. Their resources were consistently the most accurate. Our consultant was approachable and accessible. She did two different programs for training our staff, one for the management team to address how this will change the leader’s role, and did training for the staff regarding the process of shared governance and how they can be involved in the process.

As a Professional Practice Manager, Professional Governance is a major focus of my work. The book, Considerations in Professional Governance, has been invaluable in helping me align our organizational efforts with the Nursing Code of Ethics (Provisions 4 and 8), the Nursing Strategic Plan, and our Pathway to Excellence Journey and Professional Governance. I especially value the sections on Team Development and consensus building, which helped me explain in a way that the majority can understand the “why” behind shared decision-making. The insight that “leaders anchor the culture of Professional Governance” inspired our organizations monthly “Lead Their Needs” sessions to guide leaders in supporting their unit-based councils and front-line engagement. The Key Essentials summaries, ongoing education tools, and guidance on demonstrating ROI through outcomes and metrics have been game-changers. This resource is full of hidden gems that have boosted my confidence and proficiency in advancing Professional Governance at a large organization.

Our Shared Governance Team received eight hours of mentoring sessions from CHCM. They worked with us consistently, offering an impartial perspective while generously sharing their experience, wisdom, honesty, and support. This consistent engagement enabled the development of a strong working relationship. The mentoring and coaching encouraged us to think differently and explore new approaches within an organisation that has practiced shared governance for ten years. Sessions were scheduled to accommodate both UK and US time zones, delivered virtually, and offered flexibility in how they were used. We were even able to utilise one session during our annual conference, allowing colleagues from across the organisation to benefit from the opportunity.
