The Key Practices of Human Connection: Understanding the Patient Experience
July 28, 12 PM Central
Presenters: Mary Koloroutis and Enderson Miranda
Research reveals that the integration of relational and technical skills is necessary to achieve optimal quality, safety, and patient experience. Given this important truth, “relationally competent” care is as essential to positive outcomes for patients as is technical care.
A positive patient experience is grounded in an ethic of caring—a moral commitment among people in health care to protect and preserve human dignity and to never reduce a person to the status of object. Complex and fast paced health care organizations challenge our ability to fulfill this commitment with every person in our care. The See Me as a Person work, developed by Koloroutis and Trout, is a mindful framework for applying the neurobiology of empathy, compassion, and caring in a way that can be taught, learned, and evaluated. Using what scientists know about how humans are hardwired for connection, the four therapeutic practices of attuning, wondering, following and holding, when applied in relationships, ensure that every patient feels safe, seen, and heard.
Join Mary and Enderson for an introduction to the four therapeutic practices as well as an innovative web-based assessment tool which evaluates perceptions of key behaviors for positive relationships of clinicians with their co-workers and patients/families.
